AVRAHAM’S “SARAH-AVOIDANCE”: MIDRASHIC IMAGES OF SARAH'S FINAL MOMENTS

Midrash Tanchuma Vayera #23

After the Akeida, Satan went to Sarah in the guise of Isaac. As soon as she saw him she asked, “What did your father do to you?” He answered, “My father took me up mountains and down valleys and [finally] brought me to a mountain top and built an altar and arranged the wood and bound me on that altar and took a knife in order to slaughter me. And if the Holy One Blessed be He had not said to him, ”Do not send your hand against the lad!” I would have been slaughtered!” Before he had finished speaking, her soul departed from her…

Rashi Bereshis 23:2

And Avraham came: from Beer Sheva

To eulogize Sarah and to bewail her: Sarah’s death is juxtaposed with the Akeida because through hearing the news if the Akeida - that her son was readied for slaughter and was almost slaughtered – her soul flew out from her and she died.

Rashi Bereshis 23:19

Rashi Bereshis 22:19

And Avraham dwelt in Beer Sheva: [in this context, the world וישב does] not actually connote “settling down" [i.e., taking up permanent residence] for he was living then in Chevron. Twelve years prior to the Akeida he left Beer Sheva and went to Chevron…

Rashi interprets the sentence, “Avraham came to eulogize Sarah and to bewail her” as indicating that Avraham had not been with Sarah when she died. Otherwise, the verse simply would have reported that “Avraham eulogized and bewailed her.” Since, after the Akeida, Avraham had gone to Be’er Sheva and “dwelt” [temporarily] there [22:19], Rashi concludes that he was in Be’er Sheva when Sarah died. Rashi cites the appropriate sources which prove that the couple had left Be’er Sheva for Chevron twelve years previously.

Why did Avraham choose to return to Beer Sheva following the Akeida rather than to return home to his beloved wife? A possible reason is not hard to imagine. Avraham was gone with Yitzchak for six days. He probably never had informed Sarah prior to the Akeida as to why they were leaving, for fear that she would have tried to stop him! More likely: She definitely would have stopped him!! Just imagine the dialogue:

“Sarah, I’m not sure when I’ll be back; I’ll see you as soon as God gives me the go-ahead to fulfill His most recent request.* By the way, you’d better give Yitzchak a big good-bye hug, because you won’t see him again in your lifetime. You see, last night Hashem appeared to me and asked me to sacrifice Yitzchak to Him as a burnt offering… So, we’re on our way!”

After it was over, how could he ever face her again and explain to her satisfaction what he had been willing to do, what he indeed had endeavored to do? So, he avoided having to confront her by going to Be’er Sheva. Their marriage was at best at an impasse. More likely, it was virtually over.

Note that in the above Midrash which describes Sarah’s death, she does not die because of her terror for Yitzchak’s welfare; indeed, it is Yitzchak himself (so she believes) who is standing in her presence and relating the event to her. What literally kills her is the knowledge of what her husband was willing to do to their son, the fact that, “for the Love of God”, Avraham actually had tried to murder Yitzchak. Her implicit statement may be, “I have devoted my life, together with my husband, to modelling and teaching the lessons of ethical monotheism. I have thus internalized the fundamental belief that the purpose of human existence is to build an olam shel chesed – a world characterized by loving-kindness – and that this goal is attainable only if humanity remains God-centered: and God-fearing, devoted to fulfilling His will. This belief is definitional – it reflects my very essence. Now that I have discovered that a God-fearing life includes child sacrifice, I have no place in this world, so I have no option other than to leave it.”

Midrashim, such as that one, I believe, serve as a “counterbalance of normalcy” for many (almost all?) readers of the Akeida narrative. These readers (myself included) may very likely feel that, if put to the same test, they never would be able to “rise to the occasion” as Avraham did (nor, perhaps, would they even want to). Indeed, the more Avraham is admired for his heroic response, the more he becomes a standard compared to which most of us find ourselves falling short. This Midrash provides us with an alternative, validating model in Sarah Imainu.

ADDENDUM:

the following midrashim serve to reinforce our"Sarah Avoidance" reading of the narrative:

*”request” rather than “command” – in light of the petitionary word נא in the clause: קח נא את בנך.... I am indebted to my friend Dr. Maier Becker for this insight.
