NOAH A MODEL OF MORAL AMBIGUITY
The prophet [Isaiah 54:9] refers tothe great Flood as “the waters of Noah.” Commentators point* out that this termis due to the fact that Noah failed to attempt to dissuade God from destroyingthe world.
Contrast Abraham and Moses, both of whomobjected vigorously to God’s plans to destroy Sodom and the Israelite people. Also Jeremiah 12 questions God’s justice inallowing evil people to succeed at the expense of the innocent.
Points:
1. Noah’s drunkenness after he survives may be due to guilt regardinghis own failure to attempt defend the world from this horrendous suffering anddeath. In order to avoid confronting his guilt, he altered is state ofawareness…
2. Power of petitionary prayer for the other. Such prayer cantransform din into rachamim.
3. Abraham and Jeremiah prayfor justice; Moses prays that justice make way for compassion.
4. If we accept the principle that prayer may be effective, thenrefusal to pray for someone may be seen as an ethical failure. Technically =from a halachic perspective, this failure constitutes a violation of thenegative commandment “Do not stand idly by your brother’s blood.”
5. We may tend to recoil from the belief that our prayers on behalf ofothers are effective, for if this were indeed true, we would be at least partly/probablyresponsible for their welfare. The burden of that responsibility issignificant.
6. Another rationale for discomfiture with the concept of the efficacyof petitionary prayer is ethical-theological: the concept assumes that Godwould actually do harm to X if Y refuses to pray for him/her. Why would a GodWho represents the good choose to act this way?
7. The only way to effectivelydeal with this question is to de-legitimize it. We do this by placing it in thesame category as the following question about God: If God is omniscient, whyshould we bother communicating to Him prayer; the all-knowing God is certainlywell-aware of any information which we may want to convey to Him?
8. The answer: relationship trumps theological appropriateness. Theall-knowing aspect of God does not require anything, let alone the “informationcontent” which man provides. Likewise, the all-powerful God should not beswayable by anyone’s plea.
9. Factor in the concept, “Whoever prays on behalf of another and heneeds the same result, his needs will be answered first.
10. Chassidic and Kabbalistic commentaries view Moses as transmigration(gilgul) of Noah. Both are saved from drowning by a tayvah.Their soul is given a second opportunity to plead - on behalf of the people -against God’s harsh decree.
11. Praying on behalf of another aligns the person who is praying bothwith the sick person and with God. “Aligns” in this case means activates orexternalizes an intrinsic need.
12. Kedushat Levi argues that Noah refused to pray to save the wordbecause he lacked faith in his own righteousness. He believed that he was nomore worthy to be saved from the flood than was most of humanity. Therefore, hedid not believe that humanity would be destroyed. By underestimating himself,he indirectly contributed to the destruction of the entire world!
