1.     Yaakovwanted to reveal “the end of days” - קץ הימין - to his children, whereupon the Divine Presence departed from him. A possible implication is thata focus on the ultimate reward would undermine the purity of the relationshipwith Hashem and His world. Such a focus would cause Israel to see the dynamicprocess in life as a mere means to a static, summum bonוm result, rather than being a self-justifying goal in itself. This is the whole point of the שלא על מנת לקבל פרס-concept aswell as the Midrash regarding Haran waiting for the miraculous result whenNimrod threw Avraham into the fiery furnace before choosing to publicly commit allegianceto Avraham’s God.

2.     Yaakovevinced concern lest even one of his sons was not “at one with Hashem”. Thisneed for all “The Children of Israel” to be devoted may indicate not only aconcern for spiritual well-being of each individual child but also - perhapseven primarily - for the spiritual welfare of the whole group. B’nai Yisrael asa monolithic whole requires the inclusive commitment of all its componentparts. No one is expendable because no one is replaceable.

3.     The implication may well be that allJews throughout the ages constitute an actualization is an unfolding of thisone man. This implies that we are all literally one in an objective ontologicalmode, or alternatively, in a metaphorical mode. We are all necessary players inthe historical process, through the millennia, of the actualization of one man.

4.     Also, like Rashi’s interpretation of“Shema Yisrael”, this narrative indicates that is verse is not a metaphysicalstatement about the nature of the Deity, but rather a description of humanperceptions regarding the Deity. This aggadah, as well as Rashi’s interpretation ofShema Yisrael, imply that the only authentic unity that is able to be realized- among the Jewish People and humanity in general - is unification for theservice of God. As in the Rosh Hashanah liturgy:

5.     GRYD:This aggadah teaches us that the concept of ברוך שם... precedes the Mosaic Revelation. It articulates a fundamental awareness, which must accompany the Shema.

6.     Overall:This aggadah implies that the unity of God – insofar as it is recognized byhumanity in this world - is dependent upon unity of Bnei Yisrael. Israel’sunity, in turn, is dependent upon all members of the world Jewish communitybeing devoted to living a God-centered life.
